Story
Language & Autism - Strategies - Context (Word Relationships):
Object Function - Things

When we discover a person, place or thing, we seem to have an inclination to know what action is taking place as well. What does that person do most often? What happens in a particular place? What do we use a certain thing for? We cast about to understand what activity will take place when we encounter the item in question. And when we find the connection is consistently so, we link them together in our thinking and memories.
And so as we grow we begin to understand that Mom feeds us, a fireman puts out fires, and a doctor gives us medicine. We see that we eat at a table, we ride in a car, and we swim in a pool. We eat food, wear pants, and comb our hair with a comb. As we make these connections we learn the words to describe them. And we soon learn that a person, place, or thing might have many connections and that there might be many ways to describe them.
